I have been thinking of building a web site having a directory of different businesses where I live and possibly expanding to different cities. Could I start this business under my existing business entity? Would I be sued by my local chamber of commerce due to the fact they have a directory of businesses in my town as well?

I don%26#039;t think this is any different from many, many other web sites offering the same features and more. I didn%26#039;t see a way to add comments or change the name of the pictures. And the writing on the web site is not good; there are too many errors to inspire confidence.

I was just nosing around the site, and I think its a good idea. That way family that couldn%26#039;t attend the wedding can see the pictures right away. I wish they had this when I got married, but unfortunately, my wedding photos are being restored due to Hurricane Katrina damage. Plus, my photographer lived in Chalmette, so the original negatives are gone too. At least online pictures can be saved!

Can IIS work independently? Or do I have to install other software like PHP, Apache, etc....? I am trying to make a web server on my own pc even just for 1 hour straight. Can IIS work independently?
If IIS is running, check the task manager to be sure..type http://localhost in the address bar. If you see the IIS default page then you are set. You can replace that page with whatever you like. It should be in the www directory on your drive.
If you type your computers IP not the routers you should see the same thing. If you are trying the public IP (that will also be the router IP) you will need to tell the router to forward port 80 traffic to your computers IP on the LAN side of the router. Or make your computer a DMZ (bad idea). Check your routers book or help page for setting up servers.

You need to configure the domain settings in apache to point to www....., also you need to check that your domain dns has a www cname entry.

You can use a free web host that allows you to use another external domain address then buy a domain name and set it up to direct to your host. I am trying to send blocks of emails via mail merge out of Act! Database (~8000 emails in one go a few times a month) and am looking for some kind of mail server option that lets us send this amount quickly.
Ideally I am looking for no change locally so the database and mail merge stays the same only the mail server I upload to runs quicker.
Using a standard smtp mail server that comes with the web hosting I have, I can send only about 1 every 10sec (sometimes longer) , so it takes a long time
Ideally the perfect solution would be to have a new mail server address that I can upload the mail to instead that can send this volume fast, is this possible? or is there another option available, hosting my own mail server on my server?
(Just incase you fear that I am sending unsolicited spam, these clients are expecting these email, as they requested it and wont be happy if they don閳ユ獩 receive one)

Ok first try using your ISP%26#039;s SMTP server to send the emails as this may have a higher throughput than your hosting provider can offer.
Failing this you may need to move to a server side solution to offer faster throughput.
You do need to be careful not to send anything unsolicited and to offer an opt-out of future emails else your ISP may get funny about it but other than that you should be OK
How To Send Bulk Emails?
Sending out that many emails without a carefully thought out strategy is going to get you on the anti-spam lists. Or worse, suspended by your ISP and/or web host.
Here%26#039;s how I%26#039;d go about it...
1) Get a web hosting account with PHP and MySQL, if you don%26#039;t have one already (a decent one will be about $10 a month).
2) Install the PHPList application (it%26#039;s free)
3) Export the data from Act into CVS or some other delimted format.

I think its a good idea. I%26#039;m a wedding photographer and I can see the beauty of having this - but why not offer a custom CD with the flash program embedded in an html document instead of hosting it on line? they will have to be bothered renewing their doman name and hosting subscriptions eventually too.
but I think initially - you should offer the web design and one copy of it on CD also (and of course raise your price accordingly for the CD)

No, that%26#039;s not it.
Regular expressions allow you to match patterns within strings. Just because you have a regular expression says nothing about where you get the strings from.
If you have a regular expression in a Perl script on a web server, then you expect it to run when users specifically request it (or when invoked via server-side includes on other pages). So it would execute on demand. What URL would you like to match? Your own? Perhaps the referring page (if supplied by the user%26#039;s browser)? You won%26#039;t get so many URLs that way, and it would be more thorough to use Perl to extract data from your web server%26#039;s log files.
If you were expecting your script to visit other web sites and try to match URLs, then you%26#039;d need to do something to make it scan the internet, such as give it a starting page, and write the code to scan for all the URLs on that page and follow them. This is called spidering.
Spidering, if that%26#039;s what you%26#039;re trying to do, has a number of risks. The internet is rather large; the chance that you have sufficient storage/bandwidth to collect all the URLs on the internet is zero. And that%26#039;s if you avoid circular linking, or infinite linking (where sites will give you new, unique URLs to index every time you ask).

It can be used with minimal web programming/design knowledge (some learning would be a good idea - at least to know when you%26#039;re being scammed by designers who think you%26#039;re a sucker!). Ok, I am a total noob when it comes to blogging. I don%26#039;t really understand how the whole thing really works, but I have been trying desperately to get a simple standalone blog up and running for cheap, and to make it look good. So, right now, I%26#039;ve followed some instructions about installing MAMP software on my mac and now I have installed wordpress.org software using my mac as the host. However, at the end of this installation, I don%26#039;t really know what I accomplished because I don%26#039;t know how to upload what I have to a real domain.
But my real question is, is do I have to buy an actual web host and pay approx. $60 a year? or can I use my mac and this MAMP software as a host, use the wordpress database, and then buy a domain and upload the whole blog to the domain?

If you just want to get a blog up and running, go and sign up on blogger.com or wordpress.com. They host it for you and don%26#039;t charge anything, and then you don%26#039;t have to worry about all this stuff!
If you really want your own domain name, then yes, you%26#039;ll have to sign up for a web hosting plan and also pay to register your domain name, and you%26#039;d install the wordpress software on that web hosting account. Most web hosts have a little dashboard program that helps you install stuff like that. It%26#039;s not that hard.
You don%26#039;t want to use your home mac as a web host. You would need an internet connection that would support that, and most home internet connections dynamically assign the IP address, which means you wouldn%26#039;t be able to associate your domain name with your mac%26#039;s IP address because it might change without warning.
But I really think you should start off for now just signing up with one of those free services and see how you like blogging before you decide it%26#039;s worth spending the money to set up a whole site.

Where do web hosting companies get there internet connection? For example, Lycos servers have 40Mbps servers - where do they get it from? With your budget, you are not going to be able to afford much. $2500 will perhaps get you 1TB of SATA storage, but nothing else.
NAS filers are far out of your price range, and you can%26#039;t buy much more than a SAN switch and a single disk + HBA for $2500. There are HBAs which cost $2500, not including disk or switch. NAS isn%26#039;t much cheaper, and is not nearly as scalable. Your best bet for storage at $2500 is a captive direct attach, SATA external enclosure using SCSI -- which won%26#039;t scale.
The right architecture for this would be a SAN w/lots of cheap SATA disk, but you%26#039;d need a substantially larger budget $$$ to be able to do that.
Storage for photosharing website?
This isn%26#039;t a simple question to answer with so few details about your end goals. What%26#039;s your knowledge in relation to web programming, database administration, server administration, and what kind of a budget are you working with?
I have been running some searches, and I can%26#039;t find any hosting companies that will offer you storage space in terabytes. Biggest I could find was in GB. Even rackspace.com doesn%26#039;t have anything advertised.
If you take the route of hosting your own servers, and you are serving content in terabytes, one of your biggest concerns is going to be leasing bandwidth. If you have a popular site that is pulling down a lot of files this that at the end of the day can equal into TB, your bandwidth is going to be HUGE!
Server administration is going to be a big deal if in theory you have terabytes full of content being served. Initially I would suggest going with a linux setup for costs and reliability.
YOu are going to need a database to manage all of your user accounts and photos. Database administration can cost a lot. Depending on what your budget is and how serious you are, you may wanna look at Oracle. You may can slide by with MySql.
Web technologies - Ok here is where you have multiple choices. PHP, Java/JSP, Ruby? I can talk all night about all of these technologies. If you have any experience with web development, you should be able to determine which will meet your goals. I really don%26#039;t have enough information about your goals to answer this.
Unless I do some extensive research into yahoo and flickr, I am not entirely sure what they may be using. I would take a stab and say that most likely they are using some kind of an applicaton program running on their servers that are actually talking to their servers and auto-generating the html etc you are seeing. They could possibly be using java or perl.
There is just too many things to answer in detail. Most everything depends on your existing knowledge.

Hi, this (to me) is quite technical.
I resell web hosting and recently moved to a more economical provider.
I purchased 2 dedicated ip addresses. 1 of them would not resolve at all and the other one resolved to a completely different website.
I enquired and was given 2 new IP addresses and was told that it should be working shortly.
That was yesterday and its still not working. I have now been told it could take up to 72 hours (which I have read elsewhere too). So at this point there is not really a problem.
However what I am worried about is this....
What happens if after 72 hours it is still not working, will I have to wait a further 72 hours as it looks like my new host does not really know what they are doing?
OR.... is there a way I can check the progress of my DNS update (i have tried the usual dnsstuff and dnscheck etc) or is there some way I can actualy confirm he has done what he says he has done.?

DNS propagation between the root (or master servers) is supposed to be very quick. Not sure the exact numbers.
I%26#039;m pretty sure the dnsstuff queries the root servers first, before querying your local dns server so once the root servers are changed dnsstuff should start showing the right IP address. Or in other words it isn%26#039;t really affected by a propagation delay...
As to if you can check what the hosting tech has done, it really depends on what he has done. Has he updated the primary dns server for your domain? Or has he changed the ipaddress for your domain on his dns server? You probably need to get a bit more information about what actually has been done before you can take it any further.
Hopefully in 72 hours it will all be working :)

Okay, I uploaded my arial.ttf font from my computer onto my web hosting site and then tried to load some text onto a dynamic image using that font like so:

and then whenever I load the page it comes up with this error: Could not find/open font in [my page] on line 32.
I don%26#039;t see why this error is coming up, because I have arial.ttf uploaded on the same directory of this php file.

Firstly, give up trying to email yahoo. It%26#039;s very rare to get hold of someone that works there.
Right in order to move your domain name you need to add the domain in your Geocities Pro account so that their webservers will answer all requests to your domain.
Next you need to obtain Geocities%26#039;s nameserver address%26#039;s - SOMETHING LIKE ns1.geocities.com and ns2.geocities.com (NOTE: Those could be real I do not know - however Geo%26#039;s NS%26#039;s should be something like it). You must use TWO (2) NameServer address%26#039;s for ANY domain name transfer. If you only supply one the registrar will not allow it to move. This is a global requirement and all hosts will operate AT LEAST 2 nameservers. Many now operate 3 or 4.
Once you know the address%26#039;s you need to log into your registrar (where you registered the domain) and change the nameservers to those address%26#039;s. You should look for an option that says %26quot;Change nameservers%26quot; or %26quot;Update DNS%26quot; etc. If in doubt refer to your registrars help pages.
If all else fails, then create an %26#039;A%26#039; record in the DNS for your domain and put in the Geocities server IP that your website is hosted on. Of course if you choose the A record option you MUST still add the domain to your account in Geo Pro - The server needs to know who%26#039;s account it belongs to.
With regards to Geocities only registering %26#039;.com or .net or .biz or .com.us%26#039; you do not need to worry. That is all that THEY REGISTER however it is not a limit of domains that they will accept. Many web hosting companies will only register a limited amount of domain extensions however most will HOST almost ANY domain that you can transfer to their servers.
Once you have transfered the domain to their servers you need to allow a maximum of 72 hours for global propagation - Where DNS servers flush their cache and re-index the domain names from their parent server.
Once your domain is on the new server do not worry if you want to change host again - You can log back into your registrar and change the nameservers again - You still have overall control of the domain (so if yahoo offer to re-register it for you when it expires you are under no obligation).

your web page editing program will let you make links directly from your site, but you will have to upload them. your web editing program should support uploading and publishing, but if you need a recommendation, microsoft frontpage is a good place to start.

You won%26#039;t be able to host your website in your own web server unless you have a static address, which is the way you will map your domain to your server. So that%26#039;s the first point in your to do list.
Then, I assume you already loaded your site on your server, so is ready to be used....
And then, the processor/memory will come into the equation when you determine the type of site you are building, is it a very heavy site? (lots of video, graphics and music) or a more static content? also, the number of visitors you expect will factor in somewhere down the line.

You either need a static IP or use a service to redirect to you current assigned IP. IP is internet address. Ask you ISP about this and also about reverse DNS.
Say you install Fedora Core 6, it is free. When you install it install the web server and if you want mail do that too. There is an MX and A records from your domain registrar you should look at also. I point these records to my ISP but I think you can point them direct to your machine for name services. Any good linux book should be enough. Windows may work too but I have not got a clue about this. Probably easier but cost money.
The processor speed is not a problem unless you get huge traffic. You share a processor at the ISP with maybe 100 other sites. Your machine served one site and can satisfy your line rate no problem. Use an old 486, it will work like lightening with linux.
