What is the difference between a data center solution and a web hosting solution?

data center solution involves maintainig your own hardware and software - like if you want to create a website with bulletin board etc, you buy computers, you create your website, you keep it all in your computers, and other people access all of this from your servers.

A web hosting solution involves paying some one else (who maintain data centers that cater to multiple people like you) to keep your hardware and (sometimes software) safe.

you tend to decide on which suits you best based on

- expertise (if a pizza company wants a website, they are not likely to be experst at maintaining data centers, so they will choose a web hosted solution)

- security requirements (if your company stores sensitive data that it cant share with others, you may need to keep your own data centers)

- cost (hosted solutions are way cheaper since one data center can support multiple hosted solutions. Data centers will need engineers to maintain software, hardware, security, availability etc.)

as to answer your questions

1- Data centers will need a

- lot of hardware (big servers!). Remember that you electricity and air conditioning costs will be a constant running cost even after the initial expenditure on hardware.

- latest softwares like antivirus, Operating Systems, web servers etc.

- engineers to maintain software, hardware, security, availability etc. Security means, no one can access data except you. Accessibility means, nothing should ever go wrong. If things go wrong, your people fix it, even on weekends! All of these together decides the cost her

2- usually this is fairly less complicated. the cost depends on

- how much space do you want on their servers

- for how long do you want the hosting

- how much support do you need (telephone, weekend, nights etc.)

- what kind of stuff do you need (only space, mail, what OS, what other software etc.)

data center solution is aimed to serve medium up to large scale business it requires physical space and many related equipments and data interchange subscription fees and others...

web hosting solution can serve the same category but help more in small scale business and reduces costs a lot but in most cases it is easier to implement across a relatively spread location s belonging to one party.
